Vanelli hikes This trail is in Garfagnana territory between Massa and Vagli di Sopra.

The trail is linear and it rise from 500m on the sea level to 1400 m.

One way. We descent by the same way of rising.

It takes about 8 hours but is very nice.

The ancient paved Vandelli road let to link Massa to Modena and it’s still one of the most interesting building of Italy.

The group need a bus to cover distances between the hotel and the hiking starting point.

The trail is linear and goes to the Nello Conti refuge. From the starting point (500 meters on the sea level) you reach the refuge at 1400 meters on hte sea level. Going up is a rather demanding walking. The slope is quite constant with some shadowy trees and panoramic views on the valley and on the mountains.

The road was built following the project of Domenico Vandelli. Vandelli was one the greatest scientist and mathematician of the XVIII century. He invented the contour line on the maps and also thanks to this inventions he reached to make this paved road with a slope so constant.

The road was built to let tanks move from Modena and Massa in order to let Modena receive and ship loads to the only harbour in its territory (Massa).

Packed lunch
During the hiking on the Vandelli the group does some stops in order to let the guide explain all the peculiarity of the area. A packed lunch will be eaten in safe peaceful place.
The whole hiking is about 6 hours long and it’s quite hard. A full day guidance is needed. It’s the perfect trail if you like mountains and physical effort in the open air.

The best time to have a hiking here is from May to October.
